One Key is Keywords, when it comes to making friends with the search engines.
Keywords are an important part of each page of your website or post on your blog. You need to make a conscious effort to pick appropriate or relevant keywords and place them in each area of your page.
1. They should be used in your Title – the one that shows up at the very top of a browser window. For example in Internet Explorer it displays in the blue bar at the top of the browser window.
2. They should be in your Page Header. This is an area of your webpage that you do not see when you view it in a browser. It is an area of coding at the beginning of each webpage that holds specific information for search engines.
If you are hosting your webpage on a traditional type server where you can view your actual files, for example your index.html file, then you can easily find the header area by viewing your page in an html editor window. Then you can insert your keywords within the necessary Keyword html tags.
However, some website hosts offer easy to use website designer packages that may not provide that access to the raw file. Instead they will hopefully provide you with an input area to add that information.
3. They should be used in the body of your page or post.
4. They should be in the names of your image files. Etc.
The more places they show up in a particular page and the more that they match or tie in with each other the better.
So this adds another layer of thought and planning to the content that you create. As if you did not have enough to think about, right? But it really is not that difficult. Here is a trick I use….When you are choosing your keywords, look at what you have written and pretend you are the searcher. What words would they type in to try and find the information you are writing about? Those are the keywords that you want to use. Then edit your content and sprinkle those keywords throughout your content for your page.
One word of caution, don’t think that by loading your page up with every keyword you can come up with, or by repeating the same ones over and over on the page that the search engines will like your webpage better.
This will actually HURT you! This is known as Keyword-stuffing and search engines have been programmed to sniff this out like a dog sniffing out a bone. Then you will be labeled as a spammer. Which is not what you or your business wants!
Just remember that Keywords are just ONE of the keys. They are not the ONLY key. SO this week re-read through your webpages and try out your new key!
Wishing you Keyword Success,
