Top 3 Reasons Why People Avoid Blogging

Are you suffering from one of the Top 3 reasons why people avoid blogging?

You are not alone…I’ve experienced it and so have my clients. (Actually, I still do at times.) Over the years, these are the Top 3 reasons why people avoid blogging, that I have heard over and over again.

  • I don’t have time…It’s to much work.
  • I’ve already tried that and it didn’t work.
  • I don’t know how to make it look good. It’s embarrassing.

Now, I know I have been talking a lot lately about the benefits of blogging, but that doesn’t matter if you are suffering from Blogging Avoidance Syndrome.  I suffered from it for years when I started my business.

1.  So let’s start with the first reason people avoid blogging…

“I don’t have time to Blog. It is too much work.”

I understand. In the beginning, you are overwhelmed with the things you have to learn how to do. You are learning how to work with clients, how to operate a business, how to price things and market things. I get it! Building a business is work and blogging takes some work. So, it is often easier to avoid blogging!

But…if you want to grow your business, you need clients. And clients…need to learn about you. You have to educate them about what you do and what you offer. They need time and ways of getting to know you, like you and trust you. That is how they will decide if they want to work with you or not and blogging is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways to do that in your business.

They also need to know that there is a live person behind that unchanging website. Think about it. How interested would you be in a website that hasn’t been updated in over a year or more? I would wonder if they are still in business.

But of course…there is the bigger issue of being afraid to share your gifts, talents and work with the world. If you don’t share what you do, what you are passionate about, what your gifts and talents are, there will be ideal clients out there not being served, not finding you, not finding solutions. Having a business is not about playing small or staying invisible. Right?

2.  The second most common reason I hear from people is…

“I’ve already tried that and it didn’t work.”

Are you sure?

Blogging is a long-term business-building tool vs. a quick fix.

The key to making it “work” is to be consistent and purposeful. I know I struggled with both of these in the beginning. But remember, being consistent doesn’t mean you have to write a blog a day. If that is too much, then write a blog a week or every other week. Find the frequency that works for you and try to stick to it. When you fall off the wagon, just get back on.

The other reason I ask “Are you sure?” is…how are you measuring it? What is your definition of “working?”

Just remember what the real purpose of your blog is…education, sharing, relationship building, visibility, etc. It is not about quick sales or instant clients. We all wish it was, but…

One way to measure if it is “working” is to make sure you add SEO (Search Engine Optimization) to your posts and also add Google Analytics to your website, so you can see where the traffic is going and what it is doing. Without connecting your Google Analytics account to your site, it is way to easy for someone to come, read your blog, not leave a comment and disappear without a trace.

3.  The last reason people avoid blogging is … Blog Shame.

“I don’t know how to make it look good.
I am embarrassed by my Blog.”

Ah, the perfectionist streak. The good news is this is easier to fix than you think. Adding a graphic, standardizing your font size, and adding more white space can spruce up any blog or any webpage for that matter. Start by paying attention to the ones you personally read. Why do you like them? What makes them “attractive” to you? Then take that awareness and start building on it.

And remember, you don’t have to do it all at once. Incorporate one thing at a time until you become comfortable with it. Then add to it.

So what are the ways you avoid blogging? Leave a comment, I would love to hear.

    1. Kveta, blogging is writing and sharing your own experiences, observations, opinions, etc. This can include pictures or images and often links to other websites or products that you might be writing about. Does that help?
